State parks see a record number of visitors

Florida state parks had a record number of visitors last year. According to the Department of Environmental Protection more than 21.4 million visitors experienced Florida’s 160 award-winning state parks between July 2008 and June 2009, a three and a half percent increase from the year before. Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin welcomed the most visitors, with more than 1.2 million people stopping by. St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach was the most popular park in north Florida with more than 910,000 guests. Locally we saw over 184 thousand visitors at the St. George Island State park which was up from 174 thousand the year before. Bald Point State Park saw 57 thousand people up from just over 50 thousand the year before. The Orman House Historic State Park in Apalachicola brought in over 2600 people last year, the John Gorrie Museum State Park saw over 3400 guests. The St. Joe Peninsula State Park in Gulf County saw a slight drop in their visitor numbers; there were over 167 thousand last year – there were 172 thousand the year before.
