Department of Transportation continues work to remove bridge pilings

County officials say that the Department of Transportation is continuing its work to remove pilings left after the demolition of the old St. George Island Bridge which are posing a hazard to boaters. The pilings for the south end of the old St. George Island Bridge were not fully removed when the bridge was demolished in 2005; instead they were broken off just below the waterline. The Department of Transportation has already removed 5 of the pilings, but there are still a few left that could pose a danger to boaters. Currently there are buoys in the area that mark the path of the old bridge; though they do not show the specific location of the pilings. DOT will install 6 more buoys with reflective markings to warn boaters away from the area. DOT is also is also making plans to bid out the removal of the remaining pilings – a project they hope to complete this year.
