Biologists plan to test wild ducks for avian flu

State and federal biologists say they plan to collect samples from hunter harvested ducks this year to make sure the bird flu isn’t moving in to Florida. Biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services will test for the highly pathogenic avian influenza – H5N1. Sampling will occur at various times during the migratory game bird hunting season at several duck-hunting hot spots throughout Florida. Hunters won’t have to surrender their ducks – biologists only need a small sample that they get by swabbing the ducks’ respiratory and digestive tracts. Besides, participation is completely voluntary. The USDA hopes to collect 44,000 samples nationwide this year, including more than 1,000 samples from Florida.
