Big Bend Scenic Byway named an American Byway

The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration has named the Big Bend Scenic Byway one of America’s Byways. The Big Bend Scenic Byway is now one of 125 byways in the country and one of 4 in Florida to receive the designation this year. The America’s Byways program was established to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the United States. The program awards National designation based on the road’s important scenic, natural, historical, cultural, archaeological or recreational qualities. The Big Bend Scenic Byway extends 220-miles; it’s the longest individual state scenic highway in Florida. It spans three counties and includes seven state parks, two national wildlife refuges, two watersheds and numerous cultural and historic resources including historic forts, battlegrounds, museums, beaches, fishing villages, historic towns and rural communities. The corridor in Franklin County reaches almost 85 miles, starting at the Ochlocknee Bay Bridge and following Highway 98 through Carrabelle and Eastpoint and on to the City of Apalachicola. It also run north from the coast on State Route 65 to the Liberty County line and includes the St. George Island Bridge to the St. George Island state park.
