JACKSONVILLE, FL – U.S. Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) today issued a statement in response to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) decision to delay new rules that would prohibit the sale of raw Gulf of Mexico oysters during warm months unless they go through a treatment process.
Sen. LeMieux said:
“I commend the FDA’s decision to delay rules that would limit the sale of oysters during warm months. This was not an appropriate course of action for the Administration and threatened the livelihood of a great number of Floridians. Instead of allowing invasive government involvement, a better education campaign and open dialogue with the industry is what’s needed. I will continue to fight for less government regulation and advocate for common sense solutions.”
BACKGROUND: Senator LeMieux is cosponsor of legislation introduced in the Senate that would prohibit the Food and Drug Administration from requiring that oysters be treated with post harvest processing or other treatments. The measure would also authorize funds for increased education campaigns focused on the risks associated with eating raw oysters.
