Gulf County issues local state of emergency over flooding concerns

At their Emergency Meeting at 3:00pm ET today, the Gulf County Board of Commissioners issued a Local State of Emergency due to river flood conditions.

Gulf County Emergency Management would like to notify residents and property owners in the river basin areas of Gulf County that they should monitor the river conditions for the potential of MODERATE flooding. They should also begin to take any precautions and protective actions in the event that their area is impacted by flooding.

Residents should purchase food, water and medications if needed prior to flooding event. Based upon current conditions the potential exists to begin flooding homes in the Apalachicola River basin of Gulf County.

The current forecast of the National Weather Service is as follows: The Apalachicola River will continue rising to near 23.1 feet at Blountstown by Thursday Evening December 17, 2009. There is a 50% chance of rain with thunderstorms on Thursday increasing to 90% Thursday Night and a 70% chance of rain mainly before 1PM on Friday.
