We’ll be celebrating the New Year under a blue moon. The moon itself won’t be blue, but it will be full – the second full moon of December.
The last full moon occurred on December the 2nd. It will appear again tonight in time for the New Year's countdown.
A full moon occurs every 29.5 days, and most years have 12. The last time there were two full moons in one month was in May 2007.
New Year's Eve blue moons only occur once every 19 years. The last time was in 1990; the next one won't come again until 2028.
