Florida gets money to help pay heating bills for low income families

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has announced the release of over sixteen million dollars to Florida to help low income citizens in the coming weeks with their heating bills. These funds represent grants to states, tribes and territories under the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

The program helps eligible families pay the costs of heating and insulating their homes in the winter and cooling their homes in the summer. Health and Human Services says it is releasing such a large allocation of funds now in order to ensure that states have resources available to support their energy assistance programs as the weather turns colder and the nation faces high unemployment rates. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program helps more than six million low-income households deal with energy costs.

In Florida, the money is distributed through the Florida Department of Community Affairs. Florida restricts program eligibility to households with incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level.
