Franklin County seeks to end commercial fishing license fees for senior citizens

Franklin County commissioners have agreed to approach the state legislature about waiving the saltwater products license fee for senior citizens.

A saltwater products license is required for all commercial fishermen – the price can range from 50 dollars for an individual to 100 dollars per vessel. There are additional charges for fishermen who target specific species like blue crabs or pompano. County Commissioners say they would like to see those costs waived for senior citizens just like they already are for hunting and recreational fishing licenses.

County commissioners have approached the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission about waiving the fees for fishermen who are over 65 years of age but the FWC says it doesn’t have the power to do so. The commercial license fee was set by the legislature and only the legislature can waive it.

County Commissioners say they will continue their fight and have sent letters to Franklin County’s legislative delegation asking that the issue be brought up during this year’s legislative session.
