Franklin County made it through last half of 2009 without a swimming advisory issued for any local beach.
Last week marked the 26th week without a local swimming advisory; the last advisory issued for any of the 6 local beaches tested for bacteria was on June the 29th.
There were only 2 advisories issued all year for the St. George Island public beach, which is probably the most popular swimming area in Franklin County, though there were more advisories at other locations. There were no advisories issued in 2009 for the 11th street west site on St. George Island, and 3 for the beach at 11th street east. There were 6 advisories issued for the St. George Island State Park. There were 22 swimming advisories issued for Carrabelle Beach in 2009, and 26 at Alligator Point. There were also no swimming advisories issued for Wakulla County of Gulf County last week.
The Local heath department takes water samples from popular beaches looking for bacteria like e-coli or enterococcus in the samples that could pose a health hazard to swimmers.
