Whooping Cranes heading for Saint Marks

Whooping cranes will end their long journey from Wisconsin this week and area residents can see them as they do a fly-over in Wakulla County. The 20 young whooping cranes have traveled nearly 75 days and over 1,000 miles from Wisconsin, leaving their summer home on October 23rd.

The birds have been following four ultralight planes and will soon be split into two groups of 10 birds. Half will travel to St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and half will travel further south into central Florida.

People will be able to view the 10 cranes and the ultralights at a flyover event in the town of St. Marks on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Exact information should be available on-line from operationmigration.org. There are only about 350 whooping cranes in the wild so seeing 10 of the birds at one time should be a treat even if you’re not a hardcore birdwatcher. A similar event last year brought out nearly 2000 people.
