Franklin Counties public library system could lose could lose over sixty thousand dollars if a proposed state budget cut remains in place. State budget negotiators are considering cutting all state funding for public libraries in Florida – totaling over 21 million dollars.
If the proposed cut is in the final state budget, Franklin County could see a nearly 30 thousand dollar cut in state funding plus an equal amount in federal matching grants. That would be a huge hit to the county library’s 260 thousand dollar budget.
And there would be another indirect effect in that the Wilderness Coast Public Library System, which is fully state funded, would no longer be able to provide grant writing and technical assistance to the libraries it serves in Franklin, Wakulla, and Jefferson Counties. Wilderness Coast also provides bookmobile services to the three counties as well as high speed internet for the library computers.
Franklin County commissioners say they oppose any cuts in library funding. County commissioner Bevin Putnal said the Carrabelle library is more important now than ever because since the closing of Carrabelle High School the library is the only site for residents to find public computers with internet access. County commissioners say they will do what they can to keep the funding in the state budget and have agreed to write the governor and our local legislators supporting the library funding.
