FWC catches boat illegally shrimping in Alligator Harbor

FWC Resource Protection officers caught some local men illegally shrimping in Alligator Harbor last week.

According to the Fish and Wildlife Commission, officers were working a night surveillance detail in Alligator Harbor when they noticed a small vessel pulling a trawl for shrimp near the south shoreline of the harbor. The vessel was did not have running lights or lights indicating it was engaged in shrimping.

After six hours of surveillance and identifying individuals on the boat, the officers conducted a stop at the public boat ramp. During the stop, the officers identified one subject as a repeat habitual offender.

The suspect has had numerous arrests for commercial fishing violations and his license to fish in the state of Florida is currently revoked. The suspect was charged with a third degree felony for commercial fishing while license is suspended.

He was transported to the Franklin County Jail.

The operator of the vessel was charged for not displaying lights while engaged in trawling.
