A recently published book has some good information about the role Franklin County played during World War 2.
The book called Florida in World War 2, Floating Fortress , chronicles all of the camps, bases and forts that were built in Florida during the war.
Chapter 8 in the book, called Hell by the Sea, deals primarily with Camp Gordon Johnston including its location near Carrabelle, the tough living conditions and the dangerous training it provided to soldiers.
It also talks about the many units that passed through the camp and the impact the camp had on the City of Carrabelle.
Much of the information came directly from the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum from its research library as well as from interviews with actual soldiers during this year’s Camp Gordon Johnston reunion.
If you would like to get a copy of the book yourself, it is available now at the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum Gift Shop.
The museum is located at the old Carrabelle High School.
