7th Annual C-Quarters Marina Youth Fishing Tournament Saturday July 24, 2010. Register your youth to 15 year olds for a day of river and bay fishing. Fishing Categories are Speckle Trout, Flounder, Cat Fish, Pin Fish, Black Sea Bass, Spanish Mackerel, and Croaker (pigfish). Trophies will be awarded for the first three places in each category. Free shirt, hat, and rod and reel combinations for the first 125 kids registered. Register at C – Quarters Marina 501 St. James Ave. Hwy 98 Carrabelle, Fl. 850-697-8400. All kids must attend fishing clinic with parent or guardian at C – Quarters Marina Friday, July 23, 2010 at 6:00 pm.

Gulf Oil Disaster: Public Talk and Forum Saturday July 24, 2010 from 7 – 9 pm Marine Biologist and Toxicologist, Dr. Riki Ott will give a 40-minute presentation on marine oil disasters and their long term effects. She will then facilitate a positive public forum with the people present and help them expand their community action plan. This event is free and open to the public. She will be in Apalachicola at the Dixie Theatre from 7-9 pm this Saturday.

Florida Scallop and Music Festival August 6 – 8, 2010.This year’s festival begins with a Patrons Dinner with a reception at 6:00pm, five-course family style dinner begins at 7:00pm $45 per person (plus tax and gratuity) and cash bar. For more information on the Patrons Dinner contact the School of Fish Restaurant at 850-229-1122. At this year’s Scallop Festival you will find such activities as arts and crafts, a Kid’s Zone, extensive musical talent, and world-renowned chefs. Admission for children 10 and younger is free, as is those 65 years and older and military personnel with valid I.D. General admission to the festival will be $5 per person on Saturday and $5 per person on Sunday. www.floridascallopfestival.com

  • Franklin County Commissioners Meeting: A special Franklin County Commissioners meeting will be conducted at 3:00 PM EDST Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at the Franklin County Court House Annex to review and discuss the booming strategy for Bob Sikes Cut. All interested parties are urged to attend.

Announcements and Information:

-George Sanders Funeral Fund: A Funeral Fund has been set up for George Sanders of Eastpoint who drowned over the weekend while oystering.  Donations can be made at any branch of Apalachicola State Bank, part of Coastal Community Bank, to the George Sanders Funeral Fund. George is survived by his wife Karen, a 17 year old daughter, and a 5 year old son. Donations would be greatly appreciated. A date for the funeral has yet to be set.

-There will be a turtle nest excavation on Wednesday of this week with media involved.  It will take place on St. George Island.  This message is informational only. We are not expected to do anything.

-Coastal residents should be on the lookout for, and report, banded migratory seabirds.  This is very important information to help wildlife agencies determine survival rates of previously oiled birds after rehabilitation.

-U.S. Travel Association Letter to President Obama: The U.S. Travel Association is asking for the entire travel industry to come together and lend a hand to get thousands of travel employees in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida to sign on to a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to put in place a short- and long-term recovery plan focused on maintaining a strong travel economy in the Gulf region and attracting business and leisure travelers back to the region. If you have properties or networks in the area, you can help by passing along this urgent call to action. By doing so, you will hopefully enhance the message and increase its effectiveness. -SBA Disaster Assistance: The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is offering low-interest disaster loans to small non-farm businesses who suffer economic injury due to the Deepwater BP Oil Spill that began on April 20, 2010. Florida Business Recovery Centers are open Mondays through Fridays from 8 am to 5 pm and located at: Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce 112 Commerce Street Apalachicola, Fl. 32320 and Wakulla Agricultural Center 84 Cedar Avenue Crawfordville, Fl. 32327.
