Franklin County oysterman feared drowned

A Franklin County oysterman went overboard Thursday afternoon while oystering off of St. George Island and is presumed dead.

41 year old George Sanders of Eastpoint is believed to have drowned after possibly suffering a seizure just before 4 o’clock Thursday.

A family member said Mister Sanders was working on East Hole when he suddenly tensed up and fell overboard.

Another man on the boat was able to pull him out of the water, but he almost immediately fell in again.

This time the man was unable to find him.

Search teams along with friends and family along with divers from the Franklin County sheriff’s department searched for Mister Sanders Body through the evening.

He had not been found by 8 o’clock.

Divers said the area was difficult to search because of the amount of seagrass under the water and because of the extremely strong current.
