Federal employment program ending, could cost local jobs

A federal program that has provided jobs for at least ten local people has not been renewed, which means the jobs will likely disappear at the end of this month.

The Florida Back to Work initiative used federal money to increase employment in the state by paying up to 95 percent of new workers salaries and benefits through September the 30th.

Governments, private businesses and non-profit groups were eligible to take part in the program.

Franklin County took part in the program and hired 5 people to work in the county Parks and Recreation Department – the city of Apalachicola also hired 5 people through the program for various jobs in the city.

The program ends on September 30th which means that if the workers stay on after September, the county and city would have to cover the full cost of their wages and benefits – and those positions were not budgeted.

County administrator Alan Pierce said that US Senator Bill Nelson has been lobbying to get the program extended – but so far he has not been successful.
