Florida to recieve 20 million dollars to test and promote Gulf seafood

Florida will receive 20 million dollars from BP to pay for seafood inspections and marketing efforts aimed at restoring public confidence in the safety of Gulf of Mexico seafood.
Under an agreement reached by Florida’s Department of Agriculture and BP, the state will receive $10 million dollars for seafood testing and $10 million dollars for marketing over the next three years.
The agreement provides up to a three-year extension should state or federal waters contiguous to Florida have to be closed to seafood harvesting in the future because of lingering contaminants from the oil spill.
The agreement was reached three months after the Department of Agriculture sent a letter to BP outlining the added costs the department will incur in years to come to assure the safety of Gulf seafood and initiate marketing efforts in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The state says the agreement will prove positive for
Florida
’s 5,300 commercial fishermen and 1,400 Florida-based businesses which buy, sell and process seafood.
