The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is continuing a series of public workshops to discuss possible redfish rule changes.
Redfish used to be an extremely popular fish in local waters, but their population was hit hard by unregulated commercial and recreational fishing.
In 1988 the state stopped all commercial fishing for redfish and cut the recreational limits bag limit to one per person per day.
Recent population surveys have shown that redfish populations are rebounding so the state is now considering changes to the current redfish regulations.
Those changes could include increasing the daily bag limit for redfish from one fish per day to two in northeast and northwest Florida.
The FWC is also considering creating regional management areas for redfish.
A number of workshops were held in Northwest Florida in September, now the FWC is moving to the northeast portion of the state.
Public workshops this month will be held in Fort Meyers and Jacksonville, and in December in St. Petersburg and Crystal River.
In addition, the Commission has scheduled a special red drum video workshop from 6-8 p.m. on Dec. 15th, where people can attend at FWC offices in Tallahassee and Panama City.
