SOUTHEASTERN STATES JOIN FORCES FOR MOVE OVER CAMPAIGN

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The state law enforcement directors for the southeastern United States announced today that they are joining forces to protect emergency workers on our roadways.  Troopers from five states will focus on motorists who violate each state’s Move Over law during the next week.  The Florida Highway Patrol, Alabama Department of Public Safety, Georgia State Patrol, Tennessee Highway Patrol and South Carolina Highway Patrol are uniting to get this important message out to all motorists in the region.

“All too often, a law enforcement officer, paramedic or wrecker operator is seriously injured or killed just doing their job because a vehicle got too close,” said Florida Highway Patrol Director, Colonel John Czernis. “That is why our law includes protection for all first responders, emergency personnel and wrecker operators. All of these people put their lives at risk. Every one of them deserves protection under the law.”

The campaign begins tomorrow, Nov. 6, and continues through Nov. 12.  During the week-long enforcement operation, law enforcement officers will work together along busy highways and interstates to catch Move Over law violators and others breaking traffic laws.  Law enforcement officers will be out in force, issuing citations for violations.

Florida’s law requires motorists, whenever they observe an authorized emergency vehicle or a wrecker parked roadside and flashing emergency lights, to vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle or wrecker when driving on a highway with two or more lanes traveling in the direction of the emergency vehicle.  If such movement cannot be safely accomplished, the driver shall slow down to a speed of 20 mph less than the posted speed limit.
On a two-lane roadway, motorists are required to slow to a speed that is 20 mph less than the posted speed limit.  If the speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less, you must slow down to five mph.
