Historic Apalachicola Christmas Celebration Begins November 26 Be in Apalachicola the day after Thanksgiving to enjoy the town's annual Christmas Celebration. From 4-8 p.m. the streets of downtown Apalachicola will be lined with luminaries and filled with holiday spirit. Merchants will be open late and the sounds of carolers will echo through the streets filling the evening with the Christmas spirit. Santa will arrive on a shrimp boat at 4 pm at the City Dock on Water Street. A Holiday Fresh Market is also planned for Apalachicola's downtown on Dec. 4. Come early to buy hand crafted Apalachicola specialties from fresh seasonal wreaths to vintage European glass bead jewelry. Doctoral students from FSU Music School will perform as part of the Ilse Newell Concert Series on Dec. 5 in Apalachicola. Carrabelle Boat Parade of Lights & Holiday on the Harbor Dec. 11
On December 11, Carrabelle's Marine Street will be glowing with lights, and the River Walk will be the place to watch the annual boat parade and enjoy the town's annual Holiday on the Harbor event. Stroll with old friends, make some new ones, sip cider, see Santa and fill your eyes with enchantment! Fireworks are the grand finale for the parade. Fun for the whole family! Register online St. George Lighthouse Hosts Full Moon Climbs Nov. 21 & Dec. 21 The St. George Lighthouse will be open for special climbs during full moon evenings in November and December. Visitors will be able to enjoy the sunset and moonrise from the top of the lighthouse on the evenings of November 21 and December 21, from 5-6:30 pm. A lighthouse guide will be onsite as visitors climb the 92 stairs to the top to see breathtaking views of the Gulf of Mexico, Apalachicola Bay, and St. George Sound. A climbing charge of $15 per person includes snacks. It was rebuilt at Cape St. George in 1848 and 1852, and toppled into the Gulf on October 21, 2005. The St. George Lighthouse Association headed the effort to rebuild the lighthouse at the center of St. George Island, and the lighthouse opened to the public in December of 2008. |
Area Landmarks Host Holiday Open House Events Both the Orman House Historic State Park and Raney House Museum will be open to the public and decorated for Christmas during the Historic Apalachicola Holiday Celebration on Friday, Nov. 26. A Christmas Tea is planned at the Orman House on Dec. 12. For more information, please visit the Orman House and the Raney House Museum. Count Birds For Christmas Come outside and join Franklin County's 17th Annual Apalachicola Christmas Bird Count (CBC) this holiday season. The Apalachicola CBC is scheduled for December 27, 2010. Areas included in the Apalachicola count include St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge, Little St. George Island, and the Apalachicola Bay. Kayak Paddling Trip Dec. 12 Be on St. George Island, Sunday, Dec. 12, as the St. George Island Kayak Club hosts its monthly paddling trip. The holiday season officially arrives on St. George Island December 3 as the annual Palm Lighting festivities begin at 5 pm at the St. George Lighthouse Park. A one mile "Jingle Jog" starts at 5 pm on the bike path in front of Lighthouse Park and proceeds through the business district. There's no fee; it's a fun run and everyone is welcome! All runners will receive Santa hats for their heads and jingle bells for their shoes. Santa is expected around 6 pm and will arrive by fire engine to entertain and provides gifts to the children. Refreshments will include snacks, coffee, and hot chocolate. View the lighting of the island palms at sundown. Get out your recipes and join in as Apalachicola hosts its First Annual Apalachicola Oyster Cookoff on January 15. The event will feature all kinds of oyster recipes and trophies will be awarded. Winners may see their recipes published in a future cookbook! There will be music, activities for the kids and LOTS OF OYSTERS! Proceeds benefit the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department. |
