FWC DIVISION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT FIELD OPERATIONS WEEKLY REPORT December 17 – 30, 2010

This report represents some events the FWC handled over the past week; however, it does not include all actions taken by the Division of Law Enforcement.

NORTHWEST REGION

BAY COUNTY

Officer Joe Chambers conducted a follow-up investigation regarding a rifle seized from a subject arrested for night hunting.  The serial numbers on the rifle had been removed and the owner of the weapon knew the weapon’s serial numbers were removed when he purchased the gun from a friend.  A citation was issued for the violation.

Following a cold front, Officer Mike Nobles checked certain areas where fish are known to congregate during cold weather.  One fisherman had three undersized speckled trout and another had 24 speckled trout, 23 of which were undersized.  Citations were issued.

Officer Joe Chambers was patrolling the Pine Log Wildlife Management Area during the closed season when he encountered a subject hunting with a high-powered rifle.  Officer Chambers also detected the odor of burnt cannabis and located a partially smoked cannabis cigarette.  Citations for hunting during closed season and possession of cannabis were issued.  The subject, a convicted felon, was arrested by Officer Chambers last year for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.  His rifle was seized and additional charges are pending.

Officer Nick Price observed a fisherman take five speckled trout (some appeared undersized) to a vehicle and then return to fish.  The individual made two more trips to his truck with more trout and a redfish.  Officer Price identified himself and later located a bucket containing 11 speckled trout (five undersized) and two redfish (both undersized).  Citations were issued and the fish returned to the water.

Officer Joe Chambers was patrolling the archery-only area of Pine Log Wildlife Management Area when he located a subject in possession of a loaded high-powered rifle.  A second subject was also present, but had no firearm.  While talking with the subjects, Officer Chambers discovered they both possessed cannabis and smoking pipes.  A citation was issued to the first subject for possession of a firearm in a prohibited area.  Both subjects were cited for possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

Officer David Erdman responded to a complaint of individuals keeping undersized spotted sea trout at Cook’s Bayou.  A resource inspection of two fishermen revealed them to be in possession of six undersized sea trout.  Citations were issued for that violation and for interference with an officer by hiding their catch.

CALHOUN COUNTY

Officer Arnold Loyed responded to a road hunting complaint on Highway 20 west of Clarksville.  A Florida Highway Patrol trooper had a vehicle stopped on the road right-of- way whose occupants were displaying firearms.  Further investigation determined the subjects were road hunting and citations were issued.  They were also arrested for narcotics possession by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department.
