New calendar helps fund the Carrabelle Historical Society

Words of inspiration and reflections by long-time Carrabelle resident Mary Westberg are featured in a new 2011 Carrabelle calendar. Some of the photographs were contributed by well-known Carrabelle photographer Rod Gasche. Local potter and artist  Marian Morris formatted the new calendar  which is being sold for $15.00 as a fund-raiser for the Carrabelle Historical Society.
Each month and page offers words about Carrabelle “as an expression of love for my town and the people, my neighbors and friends,” describes Ms. Westberg.
In her original poem called “Carrabelle By the Sea,” Westberg writes “Maker of the universe created an island by the sea; settlers called it Carrabelle, an isle of tranquility…Nestled in a picturesque setting of serene beauty lies Carrabelle, a perfect paradise by the sea.”
Her wishes for the New Year ahead can be read in the January poem which begins “The stroke of midnight heralds a new year, and 2011 is greeted with toasts of good cheer…January brings a new year and resolutions to change; but we creatures of habit most often remain the same…yet the spirit of regeneration lives in everything; all creation anxiously awaits the arrival of spring.”
Westberg was originally encouraged to share her personal poems with her community by Pastor Julie Stephens of the Carrabelle United Methodist church, and the local fund-raising project developed from that inspiration.
“We are grateful to Ms Mary for the completion of her calendar,” said Carrabelle Historical Society president Tamara Bibb Allen, whose own family roots can be found deep in the history of the Carrabelle community.  “This fund-raising calendar effort will be an important tool for the Historical Museum, and we will be proud to have the calendars on display for sale at the Museum each weekend,” Allen promised.
Other sales outlets where the calendars may be seen include the Hometown BP convenience store, Carrabelle Junction coffee shop, C-Quarters Marina office, the Crooked River Lighthouse gift shop and the Carrabelle Library desk.  For direct sales, contact Westberg at 697-3508, Allen at 697-8380 or Mel Kelly, 697-8133.
