Area 1612 closed to oyster harvesting

A portion of the Apalachicola bay is closed to oyster harvesting today because of a rising river.

The Department of Agriculture closed the conditionally approved oyster harvesting area 1612 at sunset Wednesday after the Apalachicola River level topped 11.2 feet at the mouth of the river.

The affected area is closest to the mouth of the river just west of the river channel.

The river is expected to peak at 14.7 feet at Blountstown on Friday.

There is generally a 2 day lag between river levels at Blountstown and Apalachicola.
