Franklin County approves sand dune construction at SummerCamp

County commissioners last week gave a homeowner in SummerCamp permission to build a sand dune in front of his home.

This is the first time a homeowner has asked for this.

Alan Pierce said the sand dune would act as shoreline protection for the home which is being threatened by coastal erosion.

The property was very hard hit during Hurricane Dennis.

This is the type of natural coastal protection the county is now promoting as opposed to the building of rock revetments or seawalls.

The project needed county approval because it is being done in the critical habitat zone.

The man-made sand dune project received unanimous approval from the county board of adjustment and the county commission.
