Franklin County bans drinking at public boat ramps

Franklin county commissioners approved a rule this week to end drinking and loitering at county boat ramps.
The new rule will make it an offense to drink alcohol at public boat ramps, though it does allow people to possess alcohol so that people can legally brink their booze from their vehicles to their boats.
If you are caught drinking at a boat ramp you will face a 80 dollar fine for a first offense.
A second offense is a 150 dollar fine, and if you get three strikes you can face a second degree misdemeanor charge which could lead to larger fines and even jail time.
Commissioners say the rule will help keep a family atmosphere on public property.
Commissioner Smokey Parrish said the rule is designed to stop the loitering and foul language that comes along with getting intoxicated in a public place.
Commissioner Bevin Putnal pointed out that the rule should also protect the county from liability in case someone gets hurt while drinking at a public ramp and will hopefully cut down on the amount of broken glass at the public ramps.
No one from the public spoke against the rule, and it was approved unanimously.
The new rule will take effect in 10 days.
