Dr. Ian R. MacDonald is a biological oceanographer who uses imaging and GIS techniques to investigate the ecology of deep-sea hydrocarbon seeps. “I am an oceanographer of deep-ocean extreme communities. The physical settings include natural hydrocarbon seeps, gas hydrates, and mud volcano systems. In my project work, I use satellite remote sensing to locate natural oil releases on the ocean surface. Specialty cameras provide high resolution and time-series imaging of seep fauna and processes at the ocean floor. GIS techniques are used for assessing biological communities and geologic features with submersibles and towed cameras.”
Dr. MacDonald was one of the brightest voices during the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2010. During the disaster he brought his long training to bear in questioning industry claims as to the volume oil coming out of the blown-out well, the fate of the oil, and distribution of oil in the Gulf of Mexico. Since the blowout he has spent significant time on research vessels in the Gulf continuing his investigations. We look forward to an inside, honest report from the field!
Guests of Honor:David and Matilda McLain are long time community leaders and advocates for the Apalachicola River and Bay. In 2001, Dave became our first Executive Director and third Riverkeeper, positions he more than fulfilled until 2004 when he became our part-time Senior Policy Advisor. He served as Senior Policy Advisor where he started and still coordinates the Apalachicola River Riparian County Stakeholders Coalition (RCSC) and led the Apalachicola Riverkeeper’s response to the Deepwater Horizon disaster. He has participated as a stakeholder in the Tri-State River Compact negotiations from the outset. In August 2010, the Apalachicola Riverkeeper downsized and lost Dave and our part-time bookkeeper, Katie Herzog. Fortunately, Dave has been able to continue his work as coordinator of the RCSC and as the coordinator for the Apalachicola sub-basin of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-
Matilda McLain is a tireless volunteer at Trinity Episcopal Church where she helps run the Church’s outreach store, Your Penny’s Worth, and is a hostess beyond compare! Dave and Matilda have three children and seven grandchildren.
