Estuarine Reserve and Visitor Center Opens! The new Apalachicola Estuarine Research Reserve facility in Eastpoint is now open. The research facility, which includes a 5,000 sq. ft. visitor center, is located just off Island Drive near the foot of the bridge leading to St. George Island. In addition to educational exhibits, the visitor center features an award-winnng mural by Barbara Harmon depicting four habitats and 180 species found in the area. The center also features five separate aquaria – a 1,500-gallon one devoted to the freshwater river system, another 1,500 gallons featuring the brackish bay system, a third 2,000-gallon unit focusing on the saltwater Gulf system and two wall aquaria inside of the mural. Carrabelle's annual Riverfront Festival will be held April 23-24 along the scenic Carrabelle waterfront. This annual two day Spring Festival features original artwork, music and food. The event also features interactive exhibits from the Florida Wildlife Commission, FSU Marine Laboratory, Bear Creek Feline Center, and the Big Bend Bird Club. The hours of the festival are 10-6 pm on Saturday and 10-4 pm on Sunday. Admission is free. Special highlights will include a dockside display of the historic 1877 schooner, Governor Stone, boat building demonstrations and a special dinner and lecture. | Lighthouse Day April 16
Two of Franklin County's historic lighthouses are in the spotlight this month as Florida recognizes Florida Lighthouse Day on April 16. Visitors to Franklin County's two historic beacons will enjoy special events at each lighthouse in addition to opportunities to climb these historic maritime landmarks. The Cape St. George Light, on St. George Island will feature free climbing, food and music; the Crooked River Lighthouse will feature a unique opportunity to climb the lighthouse at night during a full moon.
