The two lighthouses in Franklin County will host hundreds of lighthouse enthusiasts in celebration of Florida Lighthouse Day on Saturday, April 16, 2011. The Cape St. George Light on St. George Island will join forces with the Crooked River Lighthouse on Carrabelle Beach to bring family fun to residents and visitors in the area.
The Cape St. George Light will offer free climbing in the tower all day, allowing visitors to climb 92 wooden stairs and an eight-rung iron ladder into the lantern room to enjoy spectacular views of Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico with no admission charge. The lighthouse, located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of the island, will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Crooked River Lighthouse will open at noon and stay open until 9 p.m. for an exciting Full Moon Night Climb. The ascent up 138 steps to the gallery of the 103-foot cast iron skeletal tower promises visitors a great view of the moon as the sun sets just after 8 p.m. Admission fees are $5 for adults and $3 for children.
St. George Lighthouse Association member Jim Wolfram will be grilling chickens in Lighthouse Park, and dinners with two sides will be available for purchase. Local band “Close Up” will play on the porch of the Cape St. George Lighthouse Keeper’s House during the day.
Both lighthouses have museums with exhibits on the history of the lighthouses, and gift shops featuring lighthouse merchandise.
The “Carrabella,” a 70-foot wooden pirate ship, invites children of all ages to climb aboard after visiting the Crooked River Lighthouse. Families are encouraged to picnic on the ship or in the park. While on St. George Island, spend some time enjoying the beautiful beach just steps from the lighthouse.
Florida Lighthouse Day in Franklin County offers something for everyone, and celebrates the historic structures who guided our seamen for so many years!
