RESOURCE PROTECTION UNIT (RPU)

GADSDEN COUNTY

Officers have been monitoring a trespass complaint on property adjacent to Little River.  Several individuals were reportedly crossing private property to gain access to the river to fish.  Along with the trespass, the individuals discarded large amounts of trash on the landowner’s property.  Plain-clothes officers entered the property without being detected and observed an individual recreational fishing.  They made contact with the suspect and learned that the individual did not possess a freshwater fishing license and also had a suspended driver’s license.  The suspect was cited for trespassing and issued a warning for fishing without a resident freshwater fishing license.

LEON COUNTY

Plain-clothes officers were working Lake Iamonia watching several individuals fishing close to the shoreline in boats.  The fishing was productive for all fishermen, but the officers observed one individual land more than his recreational bag limit of speckled perch.  At the landing, the officers conducted a fisheries inspection and found the subject in possession of 55 speckled perch.  The fish were seized and the suspect was cited for taking over the bag limit of speckled perch.

ESCAMBIA COUNTY

Officer Steve Hoomes was working an extra-duty traffic detail for road construction when he noticed the odor of burning marijuana coming from a line of stopped vehicles.  He followed the smell to a pickup truck.  He knocked on the window of the truck, but the male driver refused to acknowledge his presence.  After more determined knocking, the driver acknowledged him and complied with Officer Hoomes' order to pull over to the shoulder. The driver admitted to smoking marijuana.  Inside the vehicle Officer Hoomes located numerous partially smoked marijuana cigarettes, 11 packs of rolling papers, scales, and an expensive smoking device, and a small amount of cannabis.  Officer Hoomes cited the subject for possession of not more than 20 grams of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

SANTA ROSA COUNTY

Officer Nick Barnard checked two individuals fishing under the Garcon Point Bridge.  He found one individual in possession of an oversized red drum.  The subject was cited for the violation.

OKALOOSA COUNTY

Officer Matt Webb and Lt. Keith Clark were on vessel patrol near the Destin Pass.  As the evening hours approached, the officers observed numerous individuals fishing from the Destin Bridge.  The officers went on foot patrol on the Destin Bridge to conduct fisheries inspections. The inspections revealed an individual in possession of an oversized red drum measuring 30 inches.  The individual was cited for the violation.

Lt. Mark Hollinhead conducted a fisheries inspection on Hurricane Lake that revealed an undersized black bass, plus boating safety equipment and fishing license violations.  The vessel operator was cited for the boating safety equipment violations and another fisherman for not having a freshwater fishing license.  Both subjects were issued written warnings for possession of undersized black bass.

Officer Ryan Nelson and Lt. Keith Clark were on vessel patrol conducting boating safety and state fisheries inspections near the Destin Pass area.  Officer Nelson received a complaint of two individuals spearfishing under the west end of the Destin Bridge.  Upon arrival, the officers saw two individuals near the bridge pilings with their heads above water.  As the officers approached, one of the individuals went underwater then headed to shore.  It was later confirmed the individual intentionally discarded his spear gun.  The other individual was still in possession of his spear gun.  Both individuals were locals and aware that spearfishing was prohibited under the bridge.  Both were cited for the violation.

WASHINGTON COUNTY

Officer Danny Arnette checked a vessel at the Cedar Tree Boat Landing after receiving information that three subjects from Alabama were diving and digging to recover historical Native American artifacts along the Choctawhatchee River.  An inspection of their vessel revealed two artifact pieces and digging equipment.  One of the subjects was cited for illegally taking artifacts.
