This report represents some events the FWC handled over the past week; however, it does not include all actions taken by the Division of Law Enforcement.
NORTHWEST REGION
SANTA ROSA COUNTY
Officer Howard Jones was on water patrol on East Bay when he noticed a large smoke column north of the bay. He continued to Blackwater Bay and then to Catfish Basin in an effort to determine the location. A check with the Division of Forestry by FWC Dispatch indicated there were no authorized controlled burns for the area. Officer Sulin Shafer was dispatched to the area by land to evaluate the situation. It was confirmed there was a significant woods fire burning on water management land near the Grassy Point area. Several fire departments responded including Holley-Navarre and East Milton, as well as the Blackwater Forestry Unit, Eglin’s Jackson Guard, and Northwest Florida Water Management. The water management team worked the fire through the night and into the next day assisted by a helicopter from Eglin’s Jackson Guard.
Holmes County
Lt. Hampton Yates and Officer Larry Morris met with several landowners concerning complaints of trespass and carcass dumping this past season and a complaint concerning baiting on both sides of the Florida/Alabama state line. The officers are working in conjunction with conservation officers out of Geneva County, Alabama.
Washington CountY
Officer Kathy Jackson resolved a complaint of a derelict vessel she had been investigating. A pontoon boat that sank in Gap Pond south of Chipley had a partially exposed bow, causing a hazardous situation. Officer Jackson conducted door-to-door contacts in the neighborhood before locating an individual who directed her to the vessel owner who lives in Dothan, Alabama. Officer Jackson’s work resulted in the owner agreeing to remove the derelict vessel.
Bay County
Officer Nick Price was working at the Deer Point Dam when he located a subject fishing under the dam. A cooler was located nearby which contained three speckled trout, two of which were undersized. A citation was issued for the undersized fish and harvesting during the closed season.
Officers Dennis Palmer and Jim Moore closed separate cases involving the same suspect. Last month, the subject fled and eluded when Officer Moore attempted to stop him for night hunting on private property. Last week, the same individual killed a deer on private property, cut a fence to remove the deer, and stole a game camera. The individual was booked into the Bay County Jail for two counts of a felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of armed trespass, vehicle fleeing and eluding, theft, and night hunting.
Officer Nick Price was inspecting vessels on Econfina Creek when he encountered a subject under the age of 21 operating a vessel and displaying signs of impairment. The operator failed field sobriety tasks and was transported to the Bay County Jail where his breath alcohol content was .124/.117. The operator was charged with operating a vessel while under the influence of alcohol. An interesting note is this subject was to complete his probation for drug convictions the following day.
