County commissioners have signed off on a resolution with 7 other Florida counties impacted by the BP oil spill to request that more BP money come to North Florida to pay for coastal restoration and economic enhancements.
The 8 counties reach from Escambia County east to Wakulla county.
The resolution asks that the federal government allocate 80 percent of any clean water act fines that BP pays to the restoration of the Gulf Coast and that the projects they pay for impact and improve economic restoration and diversification as well as environmental restoration and human health.
The resolution asks that the money be distributed so that a third is distributed among the counties in the affected area, a third is shared based on miles of coastline for the affected counties and a third is shared based on the population of each county.
The county doesn’t know how much money it could potentially get if the resolution os approved but Franklin County does have a lot of coastline which would help it in the allocation process.
Commissioner Smokey Parrish said he feels the resolution is needed to protect Florida because he is afraid that if Florida counties don’t stick together they could watch the bulk of any money going to Louisiana.
A group of Florida elected officials will hand deliver the resolution to our federal representatives in Washington DC on May the 10th.
