Hurricane Griffin Exercise

Dates:  May 23 to May 24

Where:  Franklin County Emergency Operations Center

Description:

In order to prepare for the 2011 hurricane season, there will be a State hurricane exercise involving a major hurricane making landfall either in the Florida Panhandle or Florida Big Bend. This storm will bring hurricane force winds well inland, and create a large storm surge along the coast. Inland flooding will also occur due to the slow movement of the hurricane. This event will be played in real time, though your main involvement will be centered around two days, May 23th through May 24th from 9:00am till 4:30 pm. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee will be working with the Florida Division of Emergency Management to provide individual counties with products and services similar to a real event.

Even though we cannot provide you with specific details about the storm, we want you to schedule this on your calendar, so you can begin preparing your staff to participate in this exercise.  This will be a great opportunity for the persons assigned to the Emergency Support Functions (ESF) stations in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to get a better understanding of what their roles are in the EOC.

May 23th Monday will be evacuating exercise part.
May 24th Tuesday will be recovery part of exercise; we will also need the damage assessment teams to play this day and Disaster Housing Team.

Thank you in advance for participating in this exercise.

Pamela Brownell
Director
Franklin County Emergency Management

Plan Now for Another Amazing Collection of Plein Air Masterpieces

Plein Air Painters To Capture Forgotten Coast on Canvas

More than 20 nationally acclaimed artists will gather on Florida's Forgotten Coast in early May to participate in the 6th annual Florida’s Forgotten Coast Plein Air Invitational, America’s Great Paint-Out, May 13-22, 2011. Painters will set up their easels and pull out their brushes to document the landscape and culture of this last vestige of authentic "Old Florida" – the coastal stretch of scenic North Florida between Mexico Beach and Alligator Point.
“Plein Air”, a French word, simply translated means ”open air”. The roots of plein air painting are found in 19th-century Europe. An Englishman, John Constable, believed that artists should forget ”formulas” and trust their own vision in finding truth in nature.
About the same time in France, in a small village called Barbizon, a group of artists focused their attention on a subject matter that had never been done before: everyday life and the natural world surrounding it. These realists laid the ground work for the next development: Impressionism. Plein air forever changed how artists see the world.
A true plein air painting is done on location, capturing the atmosphere of the moment. The majority of the painting must be completed on site with little to no work to be done in the studio. Most artists agree this is the true test of skill as it requires complete confidence in placement of color and brushwork in a short amount of time. For example, a sunset may only last 30-40 minutes. That would be all the time the artist has to capture the scene.
The event includes 5 exhibits across the coast, daily artist demonstrations, 2 workshops, art sales and a series of public receptions. Art enthusiasts are encouraged to visit the exhibits and attend the many free special events that occur throughout the 10 day event. The “Wetroom” located on Reid Avenue in Downtown Port St. Joe will be stocked with fresh paintings that the artists deliver daily throughout the event.
“Many local artist gather and paint alongside the event’s invited artists; it is amazing to see the art being created” stated Joe Taylor, event chair.  “There is really some element of the event that appeals to almost everyone.”
“America’s Great Paint-Out" is coordinated by the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition, a non-profit organization established to produce regional multi-community cultural events that improve the quality of life for the coastal area.  The communities of Mexico Beach, WindMark Beach, Port St. Joe, Cape San Blas, Indian Pass, Apalachicola, Eastpoint, St. George Island, Carrabelle, SummerCamp and Alligator Point have joined forces to produce the most impressive art event seen along the coast. Support from both the Gulf and Franklin County Tourist Development Councils as well as Visit Florida has gained the event a national following.
A selection of America’s finest plein air artists will be participating in this year’s event, including Donald Demers, Brett Weaver,  Luke Buck, Katie Dobson Cundiff, Charles Dickinson, Natalia Andreeva, Frank Bruckmann, Bill Farnsworth, Mary Erickson, , Harold Frontz, Tracey Frugoli, James Hempel, Mitch Kolbe, Morgan Samuel Price, Lori Putnam, James Richards, Diane Scott, Greg Barns, Hodges Soileau, West Fraser, and Ken DeWaard.
Event highlights include the Mexico Beach Quickdraw on Saturday, May 14th, where all artist are invited to participate, Student Art Day, May 18, at the newly opened Apalachicola National Estuary Reserve in Eastpoint, Plein Air “TGIF”, May 20, on the docks in Apalachicola’s Riverfront Park, the Grand Patron’s Party, May 21, at the Wetroom on Reid Avenue in Port St. Joe and Art in the Afternoon, May 22, a family activity to close the event.
The public is invited, encouraged even, to locate, stop and watch the painters throughout the week. To view the entire schedule of events, enter the Quickdraw contest, or purchase tickets, visit the website, www.pleinairfl.com or call 1-800-378-8419.
