Franklin County concerned that oyster bars are "spatting up"

County officials are getting reports that there is a lot of spat building up on some of the oyster bars in the Apalachicola Bay and want the claims checked out.

Commissioner Bevin Putnal said he has received reports from oystermen that the oysters on Cat Point are real “spatted up” which he is afraid will make the bar too difficult to work in the coming years.

Spat are baby oysters; they attach themselves to larger oysters where they mature.

The small oysters have to be broken loose from the larger ones when they are harvested.

State officials say have also seen a lot of spat in the bay this year.

Commissioner Putnal said the state should check the bar at Cat Point to see if it should be opened to oystermen this summer before it grows over completely.

Local extension agent Bill Mahan said another response would be to drag across the bar with a railroad tie or something similar to break the oysters up.

Mister Mahan said he will discuss the issue with the Department of Agriculture to see what the best response would be.
