County commissioners are taking a closer look at the curbside pickup service offered by the Franklin County landfill.
The service allows local homeowners to leave yard trash and white goods on the right of way to be picked up by landfill employees.
The curbside pickup is very popular, but it may be too popular for its own good.
Commissioners Cheryl Sanders said the additional work is beginning to overwhelm the landfill and some of the larger piles of trash are becoming unsightly.
The other problem is that some residents are abusing the service.
Commissioner Pinki Jackel said that some people are leaving their household garbage on the right of way and this is not why the service exists.
Landfill director Van Johnson said getting rid of the service would help free up workers that he desperately needs for other jobs.
Mister Johnson added that it’s reached the point where no matter how much money the county throws at it the landfill will never be able to keep up with it.
It also takes away revenue from the landfill which is already hurting because of state budget cuts.
Commissioner Bevin Putnal pointed out that of the county does away with the program people will go back to dumping their trash in the woods and anywhere else they can hide it.
The board said it will address the program during this year’s budget talks but before then they want Van Johnson and county attorney Michael Shuler to come up with a number of options for the board to consider.
