FWC DIVISION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT FIELD OPERATIONS WEEKLY REPORT April 8 - 14, 2011

This report represents some events the FWC handled over the past week; however, it does not include all actions taken by the Division of Law Enforcement.

NORTHWEST REGION

ESCAMBIA COUNTY

Lt. Brian Lambert was on patrol near Muscogee Landing on the Perdido River when he observed an individual smoking marijuana from a pipe.  After making contact with the individual, Lieutenant Lambert discovered less than 20 grams of marijuana.  Lieutenant Lambert seized the items and issued a citation for the violations.

SANTA ROSA COUNTY

Officer Sulin Schafer observed a group of people camping in Blackwater Wildlife Management Area.  As the officer approached the individuals, she observed an individual jumping through the campfire.  Officer Schafer verified the individual was not hurt, but found the subject in possession of alcohol.  Officer Schafer discovered the individual was under age and cited him for the violation.  Officer Schafer also issued several warnings for littering.

WALTON COUNTY

Officer Espy Letcher received a complaint of individuals releasing hunting dogs on the Choctawhatchee River Wildlife Management Area during the night hours.  Apparently the individuals were using a local boat ramp to gain access to the management area.  Upon arriving at the boat ramp, Officer Letcher observed three trucks, two with boat trailers and another truck with a flatbed trailer.  The flatbed trailer had high metal rails and apparently designed to transport livestock/hogs.  Officer Letcher collected registration information from all three trucks and trailer combinations and waited.  Within an hour of his arrival, Officer Letcher observed two boats returning to the boat ramp.  He observed two individuals load one live hog into the flatbed trailer.  When the vehicle started to leave the boat ramp, Officer Letcher attempted to stop the vehicle but, the driver ignored his verbal commands to stop and drove off at a high rate of speed.  Officer Letcher did not pursue the fleeing vehicle because he had the vehicle’s registration information.  Instead, he requested FWC Dispatch contact the Walton County Sheriff’s Office to request a deputy to intercept the driver at his residence.  Meanwhile, Officer Letcher turned his attention to the remaining individuals at the ramp who were loading their boats on trailers.  In plain view, Officer Letcher observed blood in one of the boats.  After Miranda advisement, the two individuals admitted they were hunting, had caught the hog earlier in the day, and were transporting the hog.  The two individuals contacted the fleeing subject and he returned to the boat ramp.  This individual was charged with resisting arrest and transporting a live hog from a management area.  The other individuals were charged with hunting during the closed season and transporting a live hog from a management area.  A fourth individual, who arrived later to assist in the transport, had an active warrant out of Okaloosa County and  was transported to the Walton County Jail.

Officer Don Walker was on foot patrol conducting fisheries inspections along the shoreline off the Gulf of Mexico near Topsail State Park.  He observed several individuals fishing.  The fisheries inspection revealed an oversized red drum measuring 28-¼ inches.  The harvester was identified and cited.
