TALLAHASSEE - The U.S. Forest Service is proud to announce the renovation of the Leon Sinks Geological Area on the Apalachicola National Forest is now complete. This milestone will be marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Apr. 30, 2011, and the public is invited to attend. The newly renovated geological site is currently open for use to bicycle, run or hike.
Refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m., followed by a short ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m. The event will include a special guest speaker and recognition will be given to those individuals who contributed to the restoration and renovation of the geological site and its trails. Following the ceremony there will be two group hikes; a short trail hike, and a longer hike which, details will be available at the event for those interested.
This project was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Recovery Act targets infrastructure development and enhancement while contributing to the economic growth of the country. Construction and repair of roads and bridges, as well as scientific research and the expansion of broadband and wireless service are also included among the many projects that the Recovery Act funds.
Leon Sinks Geological Area consists of a series trails that lead to sinkholes big and small. The land situated underneath this area consists of a layer of limestone, eroded and dissolved by rainwater and groundwater to form caverns, holes, and tunnels in the limestone. This type of terrain is called "karst" and results in many geological features such as wet sinkholes, depressions, natural bridges, and a disappearing stream.
