2011 red snapper season to be shortest ever

Commercial and recreational fishermen will be able to catch more red snapper beginning this year.

NOAA Fisheries Service will increase the commercial quota for red snapper from 3.5 to 3.6 million pounds and the recreational red snapper quota from 3.4 to 3.5 million pounds.

A recent red snapper assessment showed that red snapper are no longer being overfished, allowing the increased annual quota.

The recreational red snapper season opens June 1st.

NOAA Fisheries Service has projected the red snapper recreational quota will be harvested by July 18th.

The 48-day season is the shortest season to date mainly because of the larger size of the fish being landed.

Between 2007 and 2010, the average weight of a red snapper landed in the Gulf of Mexico increased from 3.3 to 5.3 pounds per fish.
