Franklin County could save 350K by ending curbside pickup

Franklin County could save nearly 350 thousand dollars a year if they end the curbside pickup service currently offered by the Franklin County landfill.

The service allows local homeowners to leave yard trash and white goods on the right of way to be picked up by landfill employees.

The curbside pickup is very popular but the county is looking at ways to trim its budget next year and this is one idea they are considering.

Landfill director Van Johnson said getting rid of the service would help free up workers that he desperately needs for other jobs.

The 345 thousand dollar savings would come from salaries, retirement, maintenance and fuel and most importantly the loss of tipping fees that come to the landfill.

There are other issues with the program in that it is being abused by some residents and contractors.

Van Johnson estimates that 60 percent of what they pick up is either household trash, construction debris or waste from land clearing which is not what the program was designed to do.

The board plans to address the curbside pickup program during this year’s budget talks which will begin in the next few months.
