Visiting anglers may fish free during two weekends in June. The Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) has declared June 4-5 and June 18-19 as license-free weekends when a saltwater fishing license will not be required statewide. The license-free weekend of June 4 and 5 marks the opening of the red snapper season in the Gulf, and June 18 and 19 is Father's Day weekend. For more information, visit the MyFWC.com website. Two of Franklin County's State Parks and other local recreation sites offer dozens of unique saltwater fishing facilities, including piers, boardwalks and jetties. Public boat ramps throughout Franklin County allow fisherman to head out for a day of fishing in the Gulf of Mexico to catch red snapper, grouper and amberjack, to name a few. As Spring brings warmer weather, fishing tournaments in our area are kicking into gear. King Buster Tournament C-Quarters Marina, Carrabelle June 18, July 9 Tournament has been expanded to include three events this year: guaranteed $5,000 payout for each tournament. SGI Lighthouse Climb June 15 The St. George Island Lighthouse will be open for a full moon climb on June 15 from approximately 8-9 p.m. After sunset people are invited to climb to the top of the lighthouse for a spectacular view. River Paddle Trip Planned for June 25
The Apalachicola Riverkeepers will host their monthly paddling trip around the Apalachicola Bay area on June 25. The trips are free to members and $30 for non-members. The monthly paddling trips are held the 4th Saturday of each month (except November and December). The paddle trips are planned for the River, its floodplain, creeks, sloughs, and tributaries. This fun island event is an annual kid pleaser. A small donation gets you a tee shirt and two mullet tosses. The event is held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the public beach in front of the Blue Parrot Ocean Front Cafe and features men, women and children divisions. Folks line up and pay a small entry fee that goes to charity for the privilege of flinging a fish for distance and prizes. To participate, just show up Saturday morning June 11. July 4 Festivities From Alligator Point to Apalachicola, almost every community has an Independence Day festivity planned. In Apalachicola, an annual old fashioned street parade, ice cream social, concert and rubber ducky race will cool you off. On St. George Island, the local yacht club hosts an annual island parade. Anyone can enter a float or vehicle or participate in the parade. Starts mid-morning at mid-island. In Carrabelle, fireworks along the waterfront are the main attraction.
| Sea Turtle Nesting Season Underway Early summer marks the beginning of loggerhead sea turtle nesting season on St. George Island. It is the season when local volunteer turtlers begin walking the beach in order to find, mark and protect turtle nests and when homeowners and visitors are educated about turtle friendly house lighting. Visitors interested in learning about sea turtle nesting can attend weekly turtle orientation meetings on Wednesdays at 2 p.m at the St. George Island Firehouse located at 324 E. Pine Avenue. The presentations are hosted by the Sea Turtles at Risk, Inc and the SGI Volunteer Turtlers. Water Street Festival of Ice Gather on Water Street in Historic Apalachicola between August 6-27, 2011 and cool off where the river meets the Gulf! The month-long tribute to Dr. John Gorrie, inventor of the ice machine features an Ice-cream churn-off and ice cream tasting, retro dance party, snow cones and a concert in Riverfront Park and even a Jazz concert on the docks along the riverfront.
