Meg Nelson joins Apalachicola Riverkeeper as Deputy Director

Apalachicola, FL – May 24, 2011

The Apalachicola Riverkeeper proudly announces the addition of Meg Nelson as Deputy Director.  She brings 13 years of non-profit management experience with her to the organization.  Nelson hails from Walton County, Florida and was part of the team that created the vision, designed and built the E. O. Wilson Biophilia Center in Freeport, Florida.  She is a master naturalist and master wildlife conservationist with a degree in chemistry from the University of Washington.  Most recently with the Museums of Los Gatos in California, Nelson is eager to return to Northwest Florida.
“I am proud to join the Apalachicola RiverKeeper as Deputy Director,” said Nelson.  “While Riverkeeper Dan Tonsmeire works hard to maintain freshwater flows from Georgia and Alabama to sustain river floodplain habitats and bay productivity so vital to our fisheries and to deal with water quality issues, I will be behind him making sure the public is aware of the threats to our Apalachicola watershed.  An educated and motivated citizenry is crucial to our mission.  This is a team effort.  With Dan and our Operations and Outreach Coordinator Kayd Selden, we will continue to protect our 108 mile basin. “
Tonsmeire replaces Andy Smith as Executive Director.   Smith is a co-founder of the Apalachicola Riverkeeper, attorney and former president of the Board of Directors.  Smith will continue as a legal advisor to Riverkeeper from his new home in South Carolina.
The Apalachicola Riverkeeper provides stewardship and advocacy for the protection of the Apalachicola River and Bay, its tributaries and watersheds, in order to improve and maintain its environmental integrity, and to preserve its natural, scenic, recreational and commercial fishing character.  Established in 1999 and licensed by the Waterkeeper Alliance, it is one of 196 Waterkeeper organizations worldwide.
The Apalachicola Riverkeeper is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  Our financial support comes from individual and business donors, private foundation and grants.
