REPRESENTATIVE PATRONIS’ BAN OF DANGEROUS ‘BATH SALTS’ UNANIMOUSLY PASSES THE SENATE, HEADS TO GOVERNOR

Tallahassee, Fla. - Today Representative Jimmy Patronis’ (R-Panama City) bill banning the use of the dangerous narcotic MDPV, commonly referred to as bath salts, took another major step toward becoming law, unanimously passing the Florida Senate.

“I'm humbled by the swift action from our government, local to statewide, to ban this deadly substance, and I want to thank the bill’s Senate sponsor, Senator Wise, for his hard work on this legislation. I also want to thank Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen for bringing this important issue to the attention of myself and Attorney General Bondi.

“This bipartisan legislation is critical in ensuring that these extremely dangerous narcotics are no longer available to unsuspecting Floridians, as well as giving law enforcement an important tool to fight their illicit use,” said Representative Jimmy Patronis.

HB 1039 enacts a ban on the bath salt narcotics codifying an emergency rule put in place by Attorney General Pam Bondi on January 26, 2011, which without legislative action would have expired on June 30, 2011.

“I am grateful to Representative Patronis and the Florida House of Representatives for their hard work and leadership in banning the deadly drug, MDPV,” stated Attorney General Bondi. “This legislation will protect Floridians and save lives.”

HB 1039, having unanimously passed both the House and Senate, will now be sent to the Governor to be signed into law.
