Safe Boating Week begins Saturday so put on your life jacket

National Safe Boating Week begins on Saturday– the theme of this year’s event is “wear it”.

The National campaign hopes to get more boaters to wear their life jackets in an effort to lower the number of boating deaths in US waters.

Florida, which leads the nation in boating accidents and fatalities, would have seen many fewer deaths last year if more boaters did wear their life jackets.

67 people were killed while boating last year - there were 610 boating accidents.

84 percent of the people killed were not wearing life jackets.

Over a quarter of the boating fatalities last year were caused by alcohol or drug use.

And boating while drunk is not only dangerous, it can be an expensive crime.

Punishments can include fines and court costs plus additional penalties if you refuse to submit to a breath test.

There is also community service, probation, and your boat can be impounded.
