FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 5, 2011

Yesterday I rode with Commissioner Jackel and representatives of the Coast Guard and SWS on the beach.  They have completed their cleanup of our beaches and everything that they could possibly find has been collected.  They cleaned 18 miles of beachfront and collected approx 8 quart size bags of oil product, sea weed and shells.  This should cease vehicle activity on the beaches, except for occasional inspections.

Everyone responded very quickly to our calls and requests and we are very appreciative of their response.  They will be available if we need them in the future and hopefully we will not.  This was an extremely minimal event and almost everyone has been cooperative in understanding the potential impact this has on our area.

We have walked some areas today and have not seen any new stuff on the beach.  Please let me know if anyone sees a situation that needs to be addressed.  As famous Island resident Mason Bean says, “Another day in paradise” and it is a beautiful day to day.  So, enjoy it, come to the Humane Society fundraiser at Sometimes It’s Hotter and let’s celebrate being oil free together.
