Campfires, ground fires banned in Apalachicola National Forest

Campfires have been banned in the Apalachicola National forest because of concerns about wildfires.

Extreme drought conditions have caused the Forest Service to issue a temporary ban on campfires in the National Forest.

Extreme conditions mean fires start quickly, spread furiously, and burn intensely.

Stove fires are still allowed in commercially designed devices for cooking such as propane cook stoves and above-the-ground pedestal grills.

Fires placed directly on the ground for cooking purposes are considered campfires and are prohibited.

The ban also extends to all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles which don’t have a spark-arresting device properly installed.

The ban will remain in effect until further notice.

Violating the ban is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000.00 for an individual and $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
