Franklin County Sheriff's office urges no outdoor burning

The Franklin County Sheriff’s office is urging everyone to stop outdoor burning.

The department has backed off a full burn ban, but says that residents need to stop outdoor burning or using fireworks in Franklin County until the fire threat for the area decreases.

Franklin County and much of the southeast are facing drought conditions that have left the area very dry.

The drought index for Franklin County is averaging about 600 on a scale of 0 to 800 which is dry enough to cause concern.

There are specific locations, however, in which the drought index is between 600 and 700 which is dangerously dry.

The sheriff’s office is asking that people stop all outdoor burning including bonfires on the beach and fireworks of all types – if you re going to use your grill make sure its constantly tended and douse the charcoal with water.

Don’t pour them on the ground to burn out on their own.

And if you’re a smoker, put the butts in your ashtray.

A cigarette is fuel enough to start a fire which can quickly grow out of control.
