Bruce St. George Island State Park, you weren't surprised when Dr. Stephen Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach) ranked this beach near the top of his 2011 Top 10 List. If you haven't visited this pristine stretch of coastal paradise, this month would be a great time to come experience it.
Lets Camp!
Many visitors think of the St. George Island State Park as a secluded beach perfect for a quiet weekend stroll. However, this 1,962 acre park located at the eastern end of St. George Island offers a full facility family campground that rivals the best campgrounds in the country. The park features 60 campsites, a playground, electricity, water hookups and hot showers. The park has two boat ramps which are best suited for shallow draft vessels. The bay side of the island offers the most sheltered paddling for canoe or kayak, but you can explore the Gulf beaches on days when the seas are calm. Turtle Tips
What do sea turtles and visitors to St. George Island have in common? They both migrate to the beach - one group comes for recreation, the other for re-creation! Here are some tips to make your turtle experience positive for each of you! . Keep exterior lights out and shades drawn between dusk and dawn. . Avoid shining lights on a sea turtle or snapping flash photos. . Take in beach chairs, tents and toys at night, so a sea turtle won't get tangled in them. Fill in any holes you dig on the beach. . If you are lucky enough to see a turtle;stay away and watch from a distance. Better yet, call a turtle volunteer (850-927-2103) to monitor the event.
