Stay safe in Florida's heat

Florida is currently facing very high temperatures, and residents and visitors to the Sunshine State should take precautions to avoid heat related illnesses.

The extreme heat and humid conditions can cause heat cramps, exhaustion and even strokes.

To avoid health problems from the heat state health officials recommend that you minimize your exposure to heat or direct sunlight, especially during the sun's peak hours, from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Stay in well ventilated areas, preferably air conditioning and wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing.

Light colors are best, because they reflect the heat.

Take frequent showers or baths to cool your body temperature and use sunscreen to guard against skin damage and possible skin cancer.

Remember to re-apply sunscreen after swimming or heavy perspiration.

And remember to drink plenty of water or fruit or vegetable juice.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the daytime because those beverages can dehydrate the body.

Excessive heat can be very dangerous - so take a few precautions and enjoy the sunshine safely.
