Wildfire Comes In All Sizes

Wildfire activity, as predicted, has been steadily increasing across the State.  As June begins Florida has 232 active fires burning some 18,614 acres.  In our area drought conditions, high temperatures, lack of significant rainfall, and windy conditions have made soil conditions ripe for fire.
Often wildfires are considered major based solely upon the acreage they burn.  Wildfire causes damage and destruction wherever it happens regardless of its size.  A ¼ acre wildfire that destroys the family home would be a major wildfire for that family.
Wildfire plays no favorites, it can happen anywhere at any time under our current critical conditions.  Protect your home and your family by following these suggestions:
·      Be extremely cautious with any use of fire outdoors.  It only takes a spark!
·      Postpone outdoor burning until weather conditions improve.
·      Keep vegetation watered (especially near the home). Green plants are more fire resistant.
·      Keep rooftops and gutters clean of needles and branches.
·      Keep yard clean of branches and needles.
The Division of Forestry reminds you to always provide for safety first, it only takes a spark.
