Estuarine Research Reserve opens new nature center

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection on Wednesday officially opened the new Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve Nature Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and media tour.
The 7 million dollar project took nearly 2 years to complete.
The Center actually opened in February but the official ceremony was this week.

It was attended by a number of local leaders as well as DEP secretary Herschel T. Vinyard Jr.

The center features a nature center with displays of Franklin County maritime history, an overview of the seafood industry, and lots of information about the Apalachicola River and Bay system.
There are also three large walk-around tanks that each hold over 1,000 gallons and house a variety of native plant life and creatures.
Work on the nearly 19 thousand square foot center was finished in January - the center is open to the public every Tuesday through Saturday.
There is no charge to tour the facility; the center is located on Island Drive in Eastpoint at the foot of the St. George Island Bridge overlooking Cat Point.
